While fans got a sneak peek prior to Splatoon 3’s launch, giving players an early chance to try out the Tri-Color Turf War, Nintendo announced the first official post-launch Splatfest. Taking place on September 23 through 25, players will be picking from Gear, Grub, or Fun. While the general idea of Splatfests remain the same as it was in the previous two games, Nintendo has added a few new things to them in Splatoon 3.

One of the newest additions is a currency called Conch Shells. These items have a unique function within Splatoon 3, so here is everything players need to know.
What Are Conch Shells?
New to Splatoon 3 are Conch Shells, a type of currency that can only be earned during Splatfest Weekend events. Thankfully, these are relatively easy to come by, even though they can only be collected for a limited time. They serve a dual purpose as being a currency that can be spent at a unique merchant, but they’re also used to tally which Splatoon team is the ultimate winner of Splatfest with which team collected the most.
Before a player can start earning Conch Shells, they need to pledge to one of the three Splatfest teams which can be done as soon as the Sneak Peek update arrives. Players should look for a new booth as soon as arriving in Splatsville to pledge to a side. At this point, players should jump into a match of PvP battles like Turf War or the cooperative mode Salmon Run and as they increase their Catalog Level, conch shells will be earned. First wins of the day also give bonus XP, which should help earn Conch Shells faster.
How to Use Conch Shells
With a pile of Conch Shells available, players can head back to the Splatsville hub to find a new machine called Shell-Out. This is only available during the Splatfest Event, but in here, players can spend their Conch Shells on various rewards rather than spending the usual coins. There’s an option to spend 1 Conch Shell to get a random reward, though what players get could be anything.
One thing to keep in mind is that Conch Shells are not retained once the Splatfest event is over. So while they’re also used to determine which team is ultimately the winner, players should make sure to spend them all before Splatfest ends or completely lose them.
