Reddit user BreakingGarrick posted an image to the r/SpidermanPS4 subreddit yesterday depicting the original Peter Parker up against a cleaned up fan-made version with more realistic lighting, saying it’s “how Peter should’ve looked in the remastered version.” This original model, based on actor John Bubniak, received a lot of love and appreciation posts after the new look based on Ben Jordan was unveiled.

However, the entire fandom reaction has not just been positivity toward Bubniak’s original facial capture. Spider-Man PS4 Creative Director Bryan Intihar received threats regarding the change, which he responded to by encouraging fans to use their passion in more respectful ways to “be a force for good.”
While many in the comments of BreakingGarrick’s post suggest they would have liked an updated model better, others are accepting of Spider-Man’s developers at Insomniac Games making the change in order to provide a better mocap match for Peter Parker’s voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal. There are also a few comments wondering why people are still arguing about it a month later, just over a week away from the game’s launch.
Though this remaster of Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 has been met with some pushback, the game it’s attached to has seemingly been universally well received leading up to its launch. Spider-Man: Miles Morales lets another web-slinger take over Peter Parker’s job of protecting New York for a while, and Miles will have his own rogues’ gallery and suits to collect - including a suit based on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
On top of its new adventure with improvements in graphics, loading times, and more on Sony’s next-gen console, Spider-Man: Miles Morales promises to be a stand-out launch title because fans can get it packaged with the PS4 predecessor. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered will also have new trophies and suits, so fans can keep busy regardless of who’s under the mask.
Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now on PS4. A remastered version for PS5 releases as part of the Ultimate Edition of Spider-Man: Miles Morales on November 12.
