Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar revealed as much in a PlayStation Blog post that went live not long after the new Spider-Man footage debuted at Paris Games Week. As those that tuned in to Sony’s presentation already know, the new footage focused on Peter Parker’s life outside the suit, not so much on the combat and web-slinging that have been the focus when we’ve seen the game in the past. The Peter Parker sections seem slower and more narrative-focused, and one has to imagine that the Mary Jane sections will be similar.

Since Mary Jane is a reporter in Insomniac’s Spider-Man game, perhaps her playable sections will be focused on taking photographs or something along those lines. At this point, it’s really hard to say exactly what players will be doing when they’re controlling MJ, but more details should come to light in the coming months.

Regardless of how the Mary Jane sections will play out in Spider-Man on PS4, making her a playable character opens the door for other playable characters to be in the game as well. The most obvious choice would be Miles Morales, who Insomniac has teased as having a significant role to play in the upcoming game. However, other Spider-Man characters could make for some exciting gameplay segments as well, and it will be interesting to see if anyone else makes the cut.

Even though Spider-Man isn’t due for release until next year, fans may find out about more playable characters sooner rather than later. The game will likely be featured at Sony’s PlayStation Experience in December, where more gameplay footage and other details are sure to be revealed.

Spider-Man will launch in 2018, exclusively for PlayStation 4.
