Sony released the first ten minutes of the newest Spider-Man film on its YouTube channel, which primarily details what followed after the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home. With Mysterio spitefully revealing Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker to the rest of the world, Peter has to deal with the consequences of the reveal. That includes a divided response by the public as well as a thorough investigation by the police. Peter’s not the only one who suffers from Mysterio’s actions, as his best friend, girlfriend, and aunt are also involved in the newfound public exposure by force.

These first ten minutes also include Charlie Cox’s cameo as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and further expansion on the cameo featured in Far From Home, J. Jonah Jamison, played by JK Simmons. The first ten minutes of Spider-Man: No Way Home does an excellent job establishing Peter’s conflict at the start of the film. Even though the audience knows the truth about Mysterio’s death, there’s nothing Peter can do to sway public opinion. Even worse, the fallout from this will have major ramifications on his and his loved ones’ lives.

Doing something like this is not new territory for Sony in the YouTube era. They have released the first ten minutes to several other Spider-Man movies over the years, dating all the way back to The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s actually a pretty smart strategy because it can show those who have already seen the film what it will look like on a digital medium. For others who have not seen the film, that much runtime can excite them enough to go watch it, whether that’s through buying or renting it.

All of that being said, it’s not like Spider-Man: No Way Home desperately needs that extra attention. Since the film was released in theaters starting in mid-December, its astronomical box office performance has made the studio billions of dollars worldwide, so everyone should know what the film is about by now. Said knowledge includes the return of major characters from previous Spider-Man films, most notably the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man/Peter Parker from their own franchises. So, one can argue that Sony did this out of the goodness of their hearts, as a thank you to their fans for their patronage.

They should, considering that Sony has been directly responsible for ruining the two previous Spider-Man franchises before the wall-crawler made his move to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were pretty badly received by the fans primarily because they both had way too many plotlines going on, among other issues, and that was Sony’s idea in both instances. Making it up to fans by having all three Spider-Men show up in the same film was a way to redeem themselves. Let’s just hope Sony doesn’t commit the same crime a third time.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 12th, 2022.
