Brodie’s owners, Amanda Richter and her boyfriend Brad Ames, who live in Canada, were alerted to the spitting-image dog on social media, where Brodie has over 500,000 followers.
Amazingly, the two dogs have an eerily similar and unique appearance, both being the same breed and having “almost identical facial deformities.”
At just 13 days old, Brodie was bitten by his mother, leaving him with a cranial and facial injury. Initially, a vet examination concluded that he wouldn’t need surgery. As he got older however, his injury grew and worsened. “As he got bigger, everything kind of twisted and fused together,” owner Richter told Global News.
“His jaw is really crooked. They’re not aligned. As he grows, his skull is being pulled on and that’s why his eye kind of bulges out on one side. His one side of his face is very stunted. He’s got this little eye—that’s who he’s partially blind in.”
After Brodie’s photos were posted online by the Old MacDonald Kennels before his adoption, he gained plenty of attention thanks to his special face. That same attention followed post-adoption too, after becoming a social media sensation.
Brodie was adopted by Richter and Ames in September 2019 when they brought him home the very same day they met him.
Fans around the world appreciate Brodie for his unconventional beauty, described on his account as a “Picasso masterpiece,” which his owners hope will raise attention to the adoption of pets with special needs.
“It’s nice and we enjoy it because it kind of gets the word out there for other special needs dogs that people would look past in the kennels,” Richter told Global News.
Thanks to their social media presence, Brodie’s owners were alerted to a dog in Texas with an uncanny resemblance to him.
“When I tell you that my jaw dropped as soon as I saw her face, I’m not even exaggerating,” they wrote in an Instagram post. “The same twisty face, the same markings, and even a nearly identical white nose spot? It’s just unbelievable to me.”
Raven’s background is a tragic one of abuse and she reportedly spent most of her life in a cage. With luck on their side, Brodie’s owners were approved for the adoption of Raven, despite living in a whole other country,
“The only thing standing in our way is getting her to our home,” they wrote, but Puppy Rescue Mission, which unites military personnel with their rescued animals from countries they’ve served in, has offered a helping hand.
After setting up a GoFundMe to help finance the cross-country union, the goal was hit in an hour and was more than doubled within 24 hours. Now, it stands at $7,900 CAD (around $6,200).
To get her to her forever home and a new brother, Raven is scheduled to be flown from Texas to Seattle where she will be met by a volunteer who will look after her for the night. Raven will then be driven by the volunteer to the British Columbia border, where she will finally meet Richter and Ames, a 12-hour drive away from their Alberta home.
“I fell in love the moment I saw her face and knew she just had to be with Brodie and our family,” wrote Richter.
